YOU CANT FAULT Asus for giving it another go with the latest addition to the VX series. It’s an ideal collision of brands. design, and engineering prowess. The VX3 is Asus’ most compact notebook under the Lamborghini marque. In contrast, the two previous VX models (VXI and VX2) were absolute behemoths.
The VX3’s hood’ comes in glossy black or the signature Lambo yellow. The angular lines echo the Lamborghini Gallardo. The palm rest is wrapped in leather, giving the laptop a luxurious feel. Although we weren’t able to stress test it, the hinges are made from durable titanium alloy.
For its price, the VX3’s build quality doesn’t disappoint. It’s as well put together as a Sony Vaio. Even the included accessories — color- matched wireless optical mouse, laptop bag and leather mouse pad — are up to par with the handsome laptop. Once we took it out of its swanky packaging for some real-world testing, the VX3 turned out not to be the powerhouse we imagined it to be. Partly to blame is the bloatware that comes preinstalled and is best removed post-haste.
Under the hood, it’s powered by a dual- core CPU with maxed out 4GB of RAM. It’s fast, but not exceedingly so. Perhaps another bottleneck is its Nvidia GeForce 9300M graphics card. It won’t eat Crysis for breakfast or spew blinding framerates. It would’ve made much more sense if the VX3 packed an Nvidia 8600M GT. Still, as a multimedia machine, the VX3 doesn’t disappoint. Asus has managed to cram in a DVD drive and HDMI out. If you have 72Op and 1080i/p video files, hooking up the VX3 to an HDTV monitor couldn’t be any simpler. We just wish it could do more.
